Derry Bytes helping to promote Diversity & raise awareness of Hate Crime through Art

In April 2011, a group of six Young People came together to design and create a piece of art work that would raise awareness about hate crime and represent diversity in Northern Ireland. The idea of the collage began with the group looking at what diversity meant and talking about equality and Section 75.

The next step was to think about all the diverse groups in our community and Northern Ireland. We then drew and painted images that we felt represented theses groups on to the board including Disability, Gender, Religion, Sexuality, which we then extended with words that we felt surrounded Diversity.

Phase 1

This is the beginning of our collage-where we painted symbols to represent different groups.

Phase 2

This is where we merged the equality symbol with the collage and added some words we felt represented equality and diversity.

We entered our completed artwork into the 'Hands Off My Friend' Art competition and were delighted in June to discover we had secured 1st place for our efforts to win a 64Gb iPad!
