Young people from across cultural divides celebrate the completion of a cross community cross border Diversity programme with the Mayor of Castlereagh Jim White

60 young people participated in the ‘What Unites Us?’ project, which was funded by the EU’s PEACE III Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body and delivered by the Lisburn/Castlereagh PEACE III Partnership.  The participants came from Poleglass, Tullycarnet, Newtowncunningham and Buncrana to learn about diversity in our society. This work resulted in the production of a short film ‘Just Because’, a good relations leaflet ‘Don’t Judge Me’ (download pdf version here) and a music CD ‘True Colours’.

Poleglass participant’s said “Good fun and people from Tullycarnet are sound”

“I enjoyed doing the Diversity course because I learnt a lot about different backgrounds and religions.  I really enjoyed meeting and making friends with people from different religious backgrounds.”

Tullycarnet participant’s said “What unites us was a great project.  I met lots of new people from different backgrounds and had fun making a film about how young people are sometimes treated in Belfast.  I’ve made friends that I probably wouldn’t have met if I hadn’t done this project, sometimes we meet up at weekends”.

“I enjoyed the program very much, I learnt a lot and it was great to make new friends from Poleglass”

Staff and young people are delighted with the results and want to shout about the positive work.  It will be great bringing these resources back for their own communities to see and use, and to encourage other young people to engage in cross-community work

Speaking about the project, Chairman of The Lisburn/Castlereagh PEACE III Partnership, Councillor Tommy Jeffers said, ‘It’s great to see the young people coming together on not only a cross-community but also a cross-border basis to learn about their different cultures and celebrate diversity’.
